The Blue Thistle, a robust plant adapted to the extreme conditions of coastal life

Blue thistle, or Panicaut maritime, grows naturally on the sandy dunes of the French coastline, from the English Channel to the Mediterranean, not forgetting the coast of Brittany. Firmly anchored in the sand thanks to a highly developed root system, it can withstand the extreme living conditions of the seaside. It is therefore an extremophile plant. Dune thistle is capable of surviving on sites that are exposed to strong sunlight in summer, buffeted by winds in winter and salty air, as is the case on the Pen Lan peninsula in Brittany.

If you go for a walk, you'll easily recognise the Blue Thistle thanks to its characteristic height, from thirty to sixty centimetres, and its very jagged, thorny green leaves. From June to September, it flowers, revealing pretty azure to violet balls in the middle of the leaves.

The Dune Thistle is a species protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, of which it has become the emblem. This means that the plant has been protected from trampling and uncontrolled picking. It remains abundantly available to offer us all its natural benefits.
