Retinol vs Marine Bio-Retinol: Which is the best option for your skin?
In the world of anti-aging skincare, retinol has become a benchmark active ingredient. Known for its fast and visible results, it’s highly valued for its ability to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots.
In the world of anti-aging skincare, retinol has established itself as a benchmark active ingredient. Renowned for its fast and visible results, it is widely acclaimed for reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and pigmentation spots. However, its use is not without constraints: irritation, redness, sun sensitivity... Fortunately, nature now offers a gentle and more effective alternative: Marine Bio-Retinol, an innovation drawn from the heart of the oceans.
Here is the difference between these two active ingredients and why Marine Bio-Retinol, found in our Rivage skincare products, could well be your new beauty ally.
What is retinol?
Retinol, derived from vitamin A, is a synthetic active ingredient from the retinoid family widely used in dermatology and cosmetics for its powerful anti-aging properties. It acts directly on the skin to:
- Stimulate cell renewal in the epidermis
- Accelerate collagen and elastin production
- Smooth wrinkles and fine lines
- Reduce pigmentation spots and imperfections
- Improve skin texture and radiance
Thanks to this comprehensive action, retinol is often recommended to treat the visible signs of skin aging, as well as certain forms of acne and hyperpigmentation.
However, its effectiveness has a downside:
- On sensitive skin, it can cause redness, tightness, flaking, and even a burning sensation, effects related to its excessive keratolytic action.
- It is photosensitizing, which means it should only be used in the evening, with increased sun protection during the day.
- It requires a gradual adjustment period, often called “retinization,” during which the skin may react.
· Finally, it is generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In summary: a very effective active ingredient, but sometimes difficult to integrate into a daily routine, especially for sensitive or reactive skin.
What is Marine Bio-Retinol?
Marine Bio-Retinol is a naturally derived retinoid, sourced entirely from Chlorella Vulgaris seaweed, a single-celled green microalgae known for its exceptionally high chlorophyll content. For enhanced effectiveness, it is encapsulated in a pharmaceutical-grade liposome, allowing for better trans-epidermal penetration and targeted, gradual release into the skin without compromising its balance.
Belonging to the same family as retinol, it is twice as effective as synthetic retinol without causing irritation.
- Increases cell renewal
- Increases collagen I & III production
- Increases hyaluronic acid production
- Reduces collagen degradation
Its unique feature: excellent tolerance, with no irritation or side effects.

Why did Algologie choose Marine Bio-Retinol?
At Algologie, we believe that the sea is an inexhaustible source of powerful, beneficial active ingredients for the skin. That's why our formulas draw their effectiveness from algae and marine plants, while respecting the natural balance of the skin and the environment.
It is with this desire to combine naturalness and effectiveness that we have chosen to incorporate Marine Bio-Retinol derived from Chlorella Vulgaris, a green microalgae with exceptional properties, into our new generation Rivage skincare products.
What's more, to take things a step further, we chose marine Bio-Retinol because it is a retinoid and not an active ingredient that mimics the effects of retinol (“retinol-like”), such as bakuchiol, which is found in most products on the market.
A reformulation for effectiveness and balance
This innovation is now at the heart of the new formulas in our Rivage range, designed for skin aged 35 and over in need of anti-wrinkle and firming care.
Enriched with Marine Bio-Retinol, the Rivage range:
- Smoothes wrinkles
- Firms the skin
- Lifts the features
To maximize the benefits of Marine Bio-Retinol, we have combined it with two essential active ingredients: hyaluronic acid, known for its moisturizing and plumping properties, and our patented Algo 4 complex. This synergy provides enhanced anti-aging action, while offering comfort and effectiveness, even for the most sensitive skin.
